Salkantay Trek Express - 4 Días / 3 Noches
The Salkantay trek is a high altitude trekking route in Cusco region, in Peru. It takes you through some incredible nature areas of the Andes with breathtaking scenery and amazing wildlife. Trekking includes a visit to two Inca sites; Llactapata and Machu Picchu both history and nature lovers will enjoy the Salkantay trek. It is considered to be a very well-known alternative to the famous Inca trail though it goes through the completely different areas and unlike the Salkantay Trek finishes in Aguas Calientes not at Machu Picchu itself. Nowadays Salkantay is one of the most popular treks in Peru.
Most will attest that the Salkantay route surpasses the Inca Trail in a number of ways when it comes to landscapes. The most impressive sight you’ll see along the road is the imposing Salkantay mountain and its glaciers that seem to follow you all the way throughout. This route also has the added benefit of being able to see larger animals such as deer, foxes, and chinchillas. The vegetation and plant life is very diverse in this region alongside the lush valleys and high jungles that you’ll be descending through.
If you want to fully experience the true beauty of this region of Peru, the Salkantay Trek is the way to go.
Day 1: Cusco – Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Huayracmachay
This epic tour to the Salkantay Mountain starts by departing on a private bus from Cusco (3,400 m / 11,154 ft), up to the mountain village Mollepata (2,900 m / 9,514 ft) above the Apurimac canyon. Then you’ll continue to the trailhead in Soraypampa (3,800 m / 12,467 ft) where you’ll stop to have breakfast and also meet the trek support team and horsemen.
The trek begins here and climbs up towards Salkantaypampa (4,000 m / 13,123 ft) and from there you’ll have imposing views of the Salkantay Mountain. The trek to Salkantaypampa takes about two hours and once you reach there, you’ll most likely have your snacks.
The trek continues on to Soyrococha our lunch spot, and it starts to become steeper from this point on and it becomes even more difficult after about an hour of trekking. The trail in addition to being steeper, begins to zig zag, which continues for a while before getting steeper again. From the top of the switchbacks you’ll begin to notice that the temperature starts to cool and it is here onwards, you’ll start getting more spectacular views of Salkantay range.
From Soyrococha (4,500 m / 14,763) it takes about an hour to reach Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft), and once you reach the top of the pass, you’ll be mesmerized totally at the breathtaking vistas surrounding this place. The air is thin and the weather unpredictable. You may have the chance to witness small avalanches in the surrounding mountains, and you’ll be able to capture some great photos before beginning the descent.
During your descent, you’ll continue down hills through a stony trail and marshes to the small community of Huayracmachay (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), this is where you’ll stop for camp.

The trek starts early and goes down toward the communities of Challway and Colpapampa, through a green and warm valley.
On the way down you’ll take breaks, when needed, to take pictures since the landscape is different. The views are dramatic, and it’s a great feeling and a privilege to be so close to such beauty. You’ll notice a significant change in the surroundings, from high mountain tops to lush green tropical forests. Colpapampa (2,920 m / 9,580 ft) is where you’ll stop to have lunch.
After a delicious lunch, you’ll head on your way, hiking along the Salkantay river to La Playa. The downhill is long and steady, and the views are just as stunning. It’s a beautiful hike through this valley and the variety of vegetation, birds, and views makes it one of the best in the world.

The trail leads you first to Lucmabamba and then up and over the Aobamba Pass (2,800 m / 9,186 ft) from where you’ll have spectacular views of the ruins and the peaks of Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu.
